I have 128GB of ram. It doesn’t feel like overkill. It feels like the amount of RAM a top tier PC in 2024 should have.

Depending on the game you play 64GB isn’t absurdly overkill anymore
128GB I feel still is
ArLOgpro
Easily

I have 32gb and not a single game used more than the standard 16gb, the most ram I used was 20gb and with a lot of programs open while gaming
Underlord_Oberon
We have barely migrated to 32GB, and I don’t see the industry rising the requirements any time sooner.
TheRealMeeBacon
It depends on the workload. For the vast majority of users, it still is. But if you’re running memory intensive applications, 128 may be needed.

I have 128gb and don’t need it but it might not hold true for 3 mores years with local AI 🤷♀️

For those of you who do not know, you can do more than run games on a PC. I’ve utilized the totallity of 64GB of RAM for certain tasks. Mostly editing archives or working with 4k raw video.

I remember when my laptop had 4GB and it ran JUST FINE.
Now you need 8-16GB just to use Windows…
What Happened Microsoft…
Win7 really was GOAT.
Abjection404
Not gunna lie I use every bit of my 128gbs of ram…
Advan0s
Its not going to be anywhere close to 64 in another 5 years for sure so this is an even easier bet
Luker_Spooker
The only time Ive maxed out my 32 gigs was trying to run a large llm locally
kerthard
For home use: probably. I could see 48 or maybe 64 becoming more standard in that time, but not 128.
Igot1forya
I’ve been on 128GB for 3 years. I fully plan to add more in my next build. I’d easily have 256GB if I could in my workstation. But as an industry, yeah 32GB is the new minimum recommended with 64GB the “cover all your bases” and 128GB for professionals.
IllIIIIIIl
Absolutely, unless for some reason everyone needs to run ai models locally then 32gb will be the max for a long, long time.
_j03_
Will hold closer to 13 years than 3.
MakimaGOAT
its still gonna be overkill in like 10-20 years lmao, unless obv used for work
joselrl
64GB will become the standard for gaming in probably 5 to 6 years – or a couple years after the release of the next gen consoles (PS6/Xbox something X)
We could have probably have written 20 years instead of 10 and still be true

The technology doubles in ability every 1.5 years. Obsolescence is 8 years. Query – Have the games gotten that much better for an upgrade? That’s up to the individual.
