Battlestations

About to start my shitty build

Specs/what I’ve got:
HP pavilion case £17with dvd drive!
Evo labs 500w psu £19
XUM 512gb SSD £29
AsUs M5A7BL motherboard
AMD FX cpu with stock cooler
MSI R7 260X gpu
Couple of old shitty fans.

It’s mostly bits from my previous pc before I upgraded. Just want it to hopefully run fortnite on a spare tv, so that my daughter stops bogarting my rig.

Things I’m missing:
Thermal paste! Can anyone recommend a substitute that i might find in the house? if not I’m prob just not going to bother with any.

Any other input or criticism welcome!

  1. Forgot to mention the ram. Corsair, value select😁

Looks nice!! Look forward to seeing how it all comes together as a battle station. 👍

I think I have the intel version of that mobo WITH cpu.

Good luck and when you’re done I wanna know if it runs Forza max settings

  5. Replacement for thermal paste with the alternative not using any… Might as well slap on some chewing gum at that point and see what happens.

I actually like the hardware and rig!

My rig is just as shit as that. I3 4160, kfa2 GTX 750ti slim OC, I do a have a modular 80+ gold PSU from adx, 512gb SSD, 16gb ddr3 and in a shitty zoostorm case. Honestly get some tim. Even if it’s the cheap white shit from ebay. If it’s for your daughters use for entertainment and enjoyment finish it off properly.

I literally just built a computer with these exact hardware specs for my younger brother

You could search YouTube for thermal paste substitutes. Though I don’t think they would last as long as an actual thermal paste.

Your power supply is better than mine lol

No Paste + AMD FX = A Space Heater That’l Only POST Once

Lemme know if you get more than an hour out of it.

For thermal paste just go on amazon or what ever and search for thermal paste and sort by price low to high.

This should run Fortnite pretty well on Performance settings!

Also, edit: Thermal paste is pretty much required. For most things I would recommend Arctic MX4, which you can have for $5 off Amazon.

If you don’t use thermal paste, the PC will overheat so quick.

Get some thermal paste on Amazon. It’ll be like $5.

  14. You can use toothpaste or mustard for thermal paste. Make sure it’s the smooth kind. Peanutbutter could work too. The trick is to not use too much, just a small grain of rice sized bead in the center is all you need.

  15. PravusTheRed

You have a gpu and a ssd thats a good start

  16. UPDATE:

It is basically together! I have found some thermal paste which I forgot I bought for my original build, but didn’t need as the bequiet cooler came with its own tube of paste! So with some luck, the old FX CPU might just live more than an hour or so🤞🏻.

However I can’t use it yet as the super shitty PSU, doesn’t have a 6 pin PCI output🤦🏼‍♂️. So I have just had to spend an extra £5 on a molex to 6pin PCI😞. But aside from that I think I’m pleased with it 💩.

Only real shitty bit is there’s not a lot of air intake. Just some side mesh so I’ve fitted the one red fan to it (wired with WAGO connectors😆) so it’s blowing down directly on the CPU. No holes anywhere at front of case.

And because the case is a weird left handed/upside down one, the GPU and PSU fans are both trying to pull against each other with only 30mm between🤨🤔. So I’m thinking about inverting the fan in the PSU so it blows out onto the GPU (although it would be warm PSU air🤦🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️) What do you think folks?

I think I have that same mobo or at the very least a similar one. I recognize that goofy heat sink

Hey man, congrats! Looking pretty good, hope it serves you well.

I miss these types of builds, back when computers seemed actually affordable…

My first PC was a fx 6300 and a r7 260x, I still have both and plan on building a second pc some time soon! Great to see people still using old hardware!
