While not completely true, the whole video showed what a lot of people said: that connector had been built too close to the edge for consumer use.

Hope the 50 series doesn’t roll out with this connector

    > Spends 300 hours and thousands of $$ “investigating” 12vhpwr to try and get a clickbait video.

    > Doesn’t find anything and is forced to recommend the common sense measures everyone already knew (don’t bend cables, use 3rd party cables at your own risk, get a high-quality PSU if you have a 4090, make sure the cables are fully seated, etc), admits Nvidia is doing the right thing with 2 12vhpwr cables on the 5090.

    Yep, another GN classic

it has been on his chopping block forever

been saying 12vhpwr is useless since its inception.

wire wise, the minimum spec for power supplies is 18 gauge. wires are typically 3 feet or shorter runs.

    6 pin pci-e has 3 power 3 ground.

    8 pin pci-e has 3 power 5 ground.

three wires each at 18 gauge and under 3 feet can easily hit 10 amps each at 12 volts. that’s 120 watts each. meaning the 6 pin is technically capable of 360 watts. and the 8 pin around 450-500 watts.

one of those websites that does news tested a chinese adaptor cable that terminated TWO 8pin to 12vhpwr and noted 300w through each 8pin no issues. and the temp was only 30c, half the 60c rated coating around those wires. again minimum spec for power supplies notates 18 gauge and 60c rating minimum. sure some power supplies like EVGA went crazy on the 1600w with 16 gauge wire…. that’s even thicker thus better.

we never needed a new standard. nvidia invented 12vhpwr because they wanted to shrink the cards. and having three 8pin was “ugly”…. it was never about a new standard with future proofing. proof by nvidia already doing two of the cables on their 5090 (rumor). doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a single cable connection?

if they really wanted to future proof, they would go down to like 4 gauge wire. one power one ground of 4 gauge. that would be capable of 200-250 amps…. 200 amps times 12 volts equals 2400 watts. at that point you would need a special wall outlet to even power your pc. lmao. a typical 15 amp home circuit breaker can do about 1800-2000 watts of power sustained. so if they really wanted a super safe and efficient design, 4 gauge. and dont act like wire is expensive…. because I can right now make my own custom cables using 12 gauge for dirt cheap. its not hard. buy end connectors. buy 12 gauge copper wire that has 60c coating minimum. profit.

They should just make 48V power supplies so we wouldn’t need to pass 10+ amperes through each power pin. The only parts in a modern computer that are powered directly by 12 volts are fan motors, and they need like 2W a piece.

    revisited.

Basically, if you have a 40 series graphics card, it’s time to check to see how burned out your connector is and get that RMA ready.

I’d like to insert the album cover of Kill ’em All here. But I won’t.

I mean buildzoid said from day1 that connector is trash and even explained in detail why, it took GN years to finally repeat what buildzoid said on day1 lol.

    So TLDR.
    Use the proper cable.
    Make sure it’s seated right.

  11. Darklord_Bravo

They’ve been proven to be garbage, GN is just nailing in the last couple of nails. 😂

  12. Informal_Nobody_1240

Haha I definitely understand this joke

  13. SomeTingWongWiTuLo

I made my own 12vhpwr cable day 1 of owning my 4090
