Should / Can I change my VBIOS to set higher max temperatures if they’re too low?

Hi!

I have an RX 6900 XT LC TOP from Asus which has a bios limiter on it's temperature but I don't know why it is this low. It limits at 95°C and shuts down at 103°C, which is quite a bit lower than the other models.

For example, this is the bios information sheet for the OC version (one version "lower" than mine):

I have higher limits on most values but I can't push the card much because of the temperature core limit.

Is there any way I can circumvent this? Does anyone have had the same issue and has found a solution?

Thank you.

  1. No. You’re better off cooling it better. You shouldn’t be getting anywhere near those temps but if you do the higher factory OC on your card is probably why it has a slightly lower limit – higher temps make it harder to maintain the same clock speeds, and adding more voltage to stabilize it will cause even higher temps which means you need even more voltage, etc.

Eventually you will hit *some* limit on any card – power, temps, voltage, or an absolute frequency asymptote. If you’re hitting temp limits just setting a higher firmware limit is probably possible with a modded vbios but if you can cool it better that’s a much better solution. The higher temp limit could increase wear and/or hurt stability more than it adds to performance, but better cooling will only be a good thing.

Edit: also, some 6900xt users reported that sagging GPUs can flex and cause bad cooling issues- can you try a gpu support bracket (or something like legos to hold it flat) and see if your temps improve?
