Probably due to the multiple customization options and its simplicity, it’s a good gun but me personally i would prefer an AUG, Famas or Groza over it.

It excels in medium to long range combats. One of the few rifles that can spray long distances without specific attachments. Edit: Meaning it has a consistent recoil pattern.
The AUG is better in every way compared to the M416 on paper, but the M416 is the crowd favorite. Maybe cause of the skins,maybe it sounds better, og players got used to it, who knows.. it’s just the way it is.

Why M4 became popular???
Reason:- M4 design And it’s ability to be best gun at both close ,mid range and long range
M4 is the only gun in Auto of 5.6MM which has a damage of 36 on the body without any armour. Other 5mm guns like scar , QBZ have damage of 33 and 30 on the body without armour.
M4 was used by eSports player and content creators in the tournament because of it’s Hybrid use. It can be used with literally any scope except 8X. On other other hand other auto Guns needed specific Scope for Recoil control and accuracy for example AKM – red dot and holo, ScarL – red dot , holo , 6x and 3x.
Also you don’t need any attachment on M4 to control the recoil. It’s the most stable gun if it’s used with red dot or 3X
The most important why it became popular among the normal audience and content creators is because of the skins. As far as I know M416 has most coolest mythic and legendary skins for example Glacier, Fool M4 and Lizard M4.
