It has been a weirdly strong year hasn’t it? Although octopath 2 was a 2023 game.

Rebirth alone was enough to satisfy me. First time I got to have that ps1 globe trotting feel in a jrpg without sacrificing graphics or gameplay to pull it off.

Also excited that they announced the Dragon Quest I + II HD – 2D remakes for next year

  3. Poutine4Lunch

All I see are remakes and games with a modern anime aesthetic (which is preference, but I can’t stand). Exception being The Yakuza game.

The peak of JRPGs was the mid to late 90s. Back when the genre was full of innovation and very popular.

  4. machoswanson

No, that was the mid to late 90’s with SNES and PSX.

  5. plzadyse

No we’re not – that age already passed lol

  6. YouDontPassWeDoLaugh

Not until they drop fft remastered

  7. Griffes_de_Fer

We’ve been getting good ones, but to think that this is the genre’s Golden Age would require one not having been old enough to game during the PS1 and PS2 era.

    It’s not even close.

Still, I have indeed appreciated the good ones we have gotten recently regardless.

I’m eagerly waiting for Expedition 33 and Penny Blood (Penny Blood is made by a portion of the team that made the Shadow Hearts series).

So hopefully, the best is yet to come.

Loving the JRPG comeback. Getting into the Trails series recently (from the start, on Cold Steel 1 now). Sky SC was so peak, second only to my beloved Xenoblade 2 IMO

As someone who hasn’t played any of these (and typically doesn’t play many jrpg style games), what would the most recommended to try?

  11. LostRequiem1

If it’s a golden age, then where’s the new Shining Force?! Checkmate!

Seriously though, it’s been a good year. I wouldn’t go so far as to say we’re in a golden age, but there’s been plenty for genuine JRPG fans to be happy about so far.

  12. Vergilkilla

No we are not. The best games on here are remakes and remasters

  13. LoSouLibra

Check out the new TGS trailer for a game called Threads of Time it looks amazing. Also, need to throw on some Sea of Stars, Chained Echoes and the upcoming Lunar & Suikodan remasters.

90’s will always be the GOAT for me, but it’s a great era for JRPG’s right now.

  14. Significant_Sell_594

Like half of these are remake/remastered. So maybe Olympic Gold Medal Age.

  15. Kaidyn04

JRPG “Golden Age”: 50% of the games are remakes lmao

  16. WingZeroCoder

We sure are… now that I don’t have time to actually play any of them.

Not that I’m bitter or anything.

  17. chazzawaza

Not a jrpg but dynasty warriors origins is looking amazing. Like it looks like DW is returning to its glory it used to be.

  18. Rebirth was a huge surprise for me but besides that and unicorn overlord, this isnt close.

SNES houses arguably the best jrpgs all time.
Ps1 made lots of great jrpgs
Ps2 also made lots of greats

Those are the best 3 eras probably in order bestbto 3rd best.

If you read the comment tthrough notifications, you will know i’m stupid, continue on.

  20. nerogenesis

Several of these games came out in 2023. It’s still a good time.

  21. GanacheConfident6576

why did you leave out the remaster of baten kaitos: eternal wings and the lost ocean?

  22. GreenTeaRocks

I am so happy we’re getting a DQ3 remaster. It’s impossible to find and I loved the game on GB.

  23. TheClassicAudience

Some of them are kinda meh for my taste but yeah, in general you’re super right.

Also, this happened because literally every company said “they hate them, let’s not make anymore of those, they want live service games” and the smaller studios that thought “WTF, no they don’t” made a killing profit with them again and they all jumped ship back and made the best rpgs ever.

This will happen to collectaton platformers after this once again in a couple years as well. (Hopefully).

  24. Golden age is a hyperbole. In 1999 we had FF8, Final Fantasy Collection, FF IV Remake, Parasite Eve 2, Front Mission 3, SaGa Frontier 2, Chrono Trigger and Legend of Mana. And this was all Square.

  25. Myrddin_Naer

I don’t like JRPGs, so I’m glad I haven’t heard about any of these coming out.

I’m happy that you get to enjoy them tho. It really is a golden age for gaming in general.

  26. KevinT_XY

Are there any good JRPGs that aren’t 150 hours? I like this genre but I can’t get myself to start more of them because I feel after 10-20 hours the “point” has already come across and the rest is filler to waste time, at that point the combat starts to feel repetitive and I drop it – Persona 3 was a major example of this for me. I’m still actively trying to punch through Rebirth and the introduction of Spiderman-like checklist activities in every area to that game is driving me insane.

  27. OhReallyReallyNow

JRPG Golden age was the 90’s. No contest.

  28. NoobVanNoob234

It’s more of a renaissance at best than a golden age. Still pretty awesome for jrpg fans though
