Having been beaten as a shield user. Speed is the key. Collision boxes are very inconsistent and lag compensation works against the shield. You could have had him if the winds blew slightly in your favor.
When the shield user begins backing up, lag compensation tends to work in his favor. He will be better protected as he is bashing you to death.
