4 months in prison for having what is effectively a novelty letter opener.

Fucking brits. Jailed for a damn toy

  3. jaywinner

A victim surcharge? Who was a victim of his fidget toy?

    >required to pay a £154

    >sentenced to four months in prison

Poor guy will probably lose his job and have his life turned upside down.

If they really wanted to punish him, £154 would be more than enough. A simple warning from the officers would probably suffice.

It really is a clown world.

I remember when I was a kid, everyone and their mother owned and carried a pocket knife. Not for any malicious purpose, but simply because it was a great utility tool to have for all kinds of situations.

How did we end up in a place where playing with a toy blade is considered a crime that sends you to prison?

If I ever become a billionaire, I’ll spend every dime I have to try to un-clown this world so that regular people don’t go to jail for the dumbest shit imaginable.

If you’re carrying something with the intent to use it as a weapon, it’s a weapon and is illegal. Canada has the same laws. This is a 6 inch blade that looks like a sword. It’s hard to qualify it as anything BUT a weapon when being openly used in a public space.

Even if you don’t think he should be permitted to bring this in public I can’t see how a prison sentence is justified, given that he isn’t accused of hurting or even threatening anyone.

lol UK is such a dystopian shithole

“On 8 June, officers were made aware via CCTV of a man, Bray, walking down Queens Road, Nuneaton, with the sword in his hand. Bray approached officers with the blade visible, at which point he was arrested.”

Is this an insanely dumb thing to charge and prosecute someone for? Yes. Is presenting it as “man arrested for carrying toy sword” skipping on some details? Also yes. There’s a sliding scale of “fuck around and find out” in play here.

The claim of carrying it as a fidget toy really smells like bullshit to me, dude probably didn’t consider it an issue to have it, and tried to come up with an excuse like a six year old with their hand in the cookie jar.

The British criminal justice system is totally fucked. There are many examples like this poor guy out there.

This keeps getting posted everywhere and people keep getting outraged for this guy. He is a repeat offending criminal and one of his crimes is witness intimidation. If you’re walking down the street with a six inch blade in hand, most people are going to be concerned nowadays. No one knows it isn’t sharpened or what your intentions are. If you break a law, even if it is stupid, then you may get an involuntary vacation. Y’all need to quit biting the rage bait.

This is the UK equivalent of ‘Man arrested for carrying a 1 inch long replica of Captain america’s shield’

I’m not gonna sit here and blow smoke and say the jail time is warranted because that’s Mickey Mouse shit, this should not be jail time. BUT British law on carrying knives, blades and sharps in general is _extremely_ clear. This is an incredibly boneheaded move on his part. He should not be facing jail time but a fine is definitely warranted for stupidity.

  14. Dog_Apoc

I don’t agree with the sentencing. But he shouldn’t’ve been playing with it in public.

“It is possible to find fidget toys that aren’t six-inch blades. It is possible not to walk down the street holding them out in front of you. With a bit more self-awareness, Bray could have avoided contact with us completely. ”

Says he was holding it out infront of him while walking so there’s probably more than just walking around and fidgeting with it

A screwdriver would be a much better weapon. If something looks like a blade but isn’t sharp and is so brittle it breaks if you try to stab with it: it isn’t a knife.

British people make fun of guns in America then do this shit

  18. krunkpanda

Idiot, he should’ve just carried an assault rifle and it would’ve been legal.
