The Secret Cheating Box That’s Ruining Your Favourite Shooter

A spectre is haunting online FPS games: the spectre of XIM.

These small devices have caused big problems for the competitive communities in many console FPS games.

But is this cheating? And with so many of them already out there, do console developers even have a fighting chance against these things?

  1. As a xim user, this has been available & licensed by Xbox & Sony for YEARS already. Late PS2 days to early 360 days. It was traditionally made for players with disabilities & for the small group of people that wanted to use their m&k as a gaming preference to play with their friends on consoles.. Only in recent months has the Xim really gotten more attention…Players have this misconception that you have pc movement with AA & that's totally not true. There is a vast learning curve that you'll have to learn. For example turning to fast will slow you down tremendously & turning to slow will put you at a major disadvantage.

Yet again if you're already convinced that it's cheating instead of a licensed product that is able to be used by anyone. Then there's no way in changing your mind. Of course if Mircosoft & Sony stop licensing it then I'll personally have to stop using it as well. But until then even if the game creators say that it's not allowed, that's all PR reasons because they can't violate there terms of service agreements.

  2. I hit diamond on controller in ranked 1.0. Every season after that every ranked lobby was MnK so after 8 months of playing against that for the only game that I play I bought one. Now that mousetrap is out I use controller because I know most people are using controller.

  3. you mention a small part of the issue. You didn't mention the new DMA hacks that used to be private are now being sold to the public and completely undetectable. It is sad we live in a time where people cheat to make themselves look better for validation.

  4. I remember using one of these things back in the halo 3 days on the Xbox 360. They are fucking awesome

  5. As someone that used one to play r6 with my friends on console because I hate controller, it definitely was ‘cheating’ imo it was way easier for me against them but I couldn’t keep doing bc pc just better all around

  6. I've learned that if a Console game allows for motion controls, turn it on and lab for about an hour with settings and boom people will think your cheating cause your aim is amazing. But motion controls can go toe to toe with mouse and keyboard, I've seen it on fortnite and overwatch

  7. probably gonna get dogged on in comments for this but feel like i should add some input (get it, input?)

in 2016 i moved from PC to console to play Overwatch with some close buddies who didn't have computers. we played a TON, ended up grinding out masters the first three seasons. but the higher we climbed the more fishy things became (remember, this is 2016. people have been using these a lot longer than they've been talked about). i did some research and found out there was a way to use my main input on console (keyboard/mouse). but boy oh boy, i did not know what this device was actually capable of. i ended up buying a xim at the end of 2016 as an accessibility option and a way to use my favored input, but fuck man this thing was powerful. climbed from 3700 to 4200 SR and stayed top 500 for the next 5 seasons that I would play on console before switching back to PC. i used to say it wasn't cheating, probably to protect my ego tbh. but as a former user, this is blatant fucking cheating.

also, i play at a high rank in almost every competitive FPS that i've touched. but i am not a semipro/pro player. if this is put in the hands of someone who is already in the top 0.1% of a game, it's an actual make/break for the integrity of the game. just keep an eye out y'all, if you see anyone doing aim adjustments in game that look unnatural to controller, it's because it is unnatural.

  8. this is the same problem that is plaguing THE FINALS right now. they should just separate queues by input and most of the problem can be solved.

  9. The next gen of consoles will just be shitty, less proprietary PCs.
Aim assist should not be included in any game.
Motherboard ban anyone that runs any unidentified software simultaneously with games OR has a game run with a passthrough from a secondary system. Bam, cheating will be literally one percent of what it is now.

  10. Have aim assist and support native m and k . It prevents cronus and lets people play with what they are comfortable with and also eliminates potentially banning people with disabilities.

  11. Ok, so this is because there is people playing whit mouse and keybord FPS games and is crushing the guys that play whit controller? Like, for real?

  12. Modern FPS is absolutely not worth playing. Aim Assist overtuned well beyond reason, xim, rewasd, and a multimillion dollar cheats market are all making the genre absolute garbage. Not even getting into SBMM and EOMM.

  13. I'm just saying if more shooters adopted gyro aim there'd be less of a need for aim assist. That would close the gap between controller and m+kb a ton.

  14. ximming has been a thing for like 10 years or something but only nowadays people are waking up to it in mass its crazy how long some people have been cheating and almost nobody has cared. I remember first seeing stuff about it way back on some older call of duty on ps3 and thought thats just cheating lmao. Thats how fucking long its been a thing and its only became more advanced since then

  15. Check out DMA cheating its even worse! external devices that you connect to the mainboard, which is displayed on the PC as a wifi card and through which the cheats run, i.e. via the hardware, not software, which only reads out almost all known sizes of anti-cheats. Likewise, devices that come to your pc and connect to a second pc and the cheats run over the device and are played on the 2 pc, so that your pc has no signs of cheating

  16. It's cheating 100%. Games are reading the inputs like they were coming from a controller, hence you still get aim assist. So now you have aim assist, that is meant for aiming with tiny plastic knobs that you move with your thumbs, for your mouse. The advantage is insane.

  17. The thing is That xims mask the input method, even if you think youre just KBM you're still getting aim assist, except i think seige idk if they get aim assist. thats why people call it cheating though, the rotational system that thumbsticks have pretty much require that you have aim assist to be as consistent as possible, youre just abusing the aimassist system in games like OW and Apex while using xim on console.

  18. Honestly Xim is a problem I face in Siege among other things. In Rainbow Six Siege, on console, it matters because of how recoil is managed and how movement is on controller over keyboard and mouse. Varsity and Royal Penguin said all the points perfectly as to Xim.
Other games probably have Xim as a problem but I've only seen it in Siege first hand. And it's blantly obvious after round 3 at times.
Frankly if you want to use Keyboard and Mouse, play on PC or just get better at controller. Not to mention people use xim in Siege's Ranked mode that firefights actually matter more.

  19. Meanwhile, Halo Infinite gives mouse and keyboard players aim assist because aim assist on controller in the game is basically aimbot. It was definitely one of the many contributing factors that led to 98% of the Halo Infinite PC audience abandoning the game.

  20. Mousetrap should have just banned players instead of adding input; I swear Ubisoft wants to keep all the bad players that we, the community, have been begging Ubisoft to get rid of, but nah, let's keep the players that violate competitive integrity, and ruin the experience for others.

  21. You're CHEATING if:
-you don't have to adjust for recoil control with a device outside of game.
-you use a VPN to change you location.
    -you use a 2d radar.
-you need a program to compensate for your short comings
    -YOU USE A MACRO!
